Zusammenfassung: Little research has been done on Western women who convert to Shi'i Islam. To fill this gap, this study was conducted on American and Canadian women who have converted to Shi'i Islam. Most of the research subjects in this study reported a moderate to severe sense of social marginalization after conversion. This marginalization resulted from membership in multiple minority groups (Shi'i, Muslim, convert, and female); Black converts reported the most severe sense of marginalization due to the added pressure of being a racial minority in North America. Most of the research subjects also experienced a sense of social exclusion from other Shi'i Muslims. Therefore, the question arises as to why these women continued to adhere to Shi'i Islam despite these difficulties. This article will attempt to answer this question through an analysis of the data provided by the research subjects.

Zusammenfassung: Ayatollah Khomeini and Ali Shariati are seen as twin pillars of revolutionary Islam in contemporary Iran. This article contextualizes and compares these radical discourses in three sections. It first problematizes the transformation of Khomeini as a quietist cleric into a revolutionary ayatollah. While Khomeinis theory of velayat-e faqih was a radical departure from the dominant Shiite tradition, its practice has contributed to a new era of post-Khomeinism. Second, it examines Shariatis discourse and a new reading of his thought in the post-revolutionary context. Third, it demonstrates that these discourses differ radically on the three concepts of radicalism, public religion, and state. The conclusion sheds some light on the conditions of Khomeinism after Khomeini, and Shariatis discourse three decades after the revolution. It suggests that Iran has gradually entered into a new era of post-Islamism.

In: Studies in religion. - 43. 2014, 1
Schlagwort (-Kette): Islam * Recht * Auslegung * Bioethik * Prinzipienethik * Tugendethik

Zusammenfassung: Principlist modes of reasoning in bioethics - with autonomy at the core - resonate strongly with a legalism that dominates Muslim ethics, including the understanding of the shari'a. From abortion and organ donation/transplant to end-of-life decisions, both secular and Muslim bioethics generally apply cardinal principles in ways felt to be relatively objective and certain, though they may produce different outcomes. This article builds on recent critiques, notably that of virtue ethics, in drawing attention to the cost in sensitivity to context and the individual. The Aristotelian basis of virtue ethics has a venerable place in Islamic traditions - as does maslaha, the public good, which has long played a critical role in tempering formalism in the shari'a. In conjunction with the agent- and context-centred reasoning of virtue ethics, "maslaha" can contribute vitally to negotiating competing bioethical claims. It is also more inclusive than principlist legalism, given the latter's traditionalist and patriarchal moorings. The shift is urgent amid the growing interface of religious and secular approaches to problems raised by biomedical technologies, and to biosocial issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and honour killings.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Schiiten * Migration * Hidjra * Islam * Recht * Auslegung * Geschichte 900-2000

Zusammenfassung: This study surveys rulings on the subject of migration issued by Imami Shi'ite legal scholars from the formative 10th - 14th centuries to contemporary times. Prefacing this survey with an examination of hijrah (migration) in the Qur'an and early Imami traditions, the study opens up reflection on an area of Islamic legal discourse that is largely ignored in the literature on Islam in the West. In examining the legal discourse on migration as an historical phenomenon central to the early construction of Muslim identity and not simply as an ad hoc response to modern contingencies, we are able to situate the rulings of traditional modern legal scholars within a long-standing discursive framework. The study demonstrates that while early jurists constructed a rationale for migration to Muslim-held territory that served the interests of the community or state and religion, jurists of the modern period re-employ the same theoretical models while adjusting them to respond to the historical circumstances of cultural and religious globalization.

Zusammenfassung: This paper focuses on the Bene Israel community in Mumbai, a remnant of a once thriving Jewish population decimated in part because of emigration to Israel. I argue that the Bene Israel, who have been maligned because of their dark skin colour and borrowed customs, primarily from Hinduism, constitute a way of being Jewish that consciously rejects authoritarian and rabbinic hegemony. They constitute a 'third,' hybrid kind of space signifying that the borders of Jewish identity are permeable and flexible. They are therefore a prime example of the possibilities within Judaism not limited to a prescribed, and circumscribed system of belief and practice but a living testament to cultural and religious multiplicity.

In: Studies in religion. - 43. 2014, 1
Schlagwort (-Kette): Robin (Hood) * England * Katholizismus * Marienverehrung * Geschichte 1300-1500

Zusammenfassung: A number of reformist commentators in late medieval England suggested that stories about Robin Hood were especially popular with people who were not especially devout. On the other hand, notwithstanding these reformist comments, we also have evidence that Robin Hood stories were sometimes used as sermon exempla, which suggests that they were seen (at least by some preachers) as promoting acceptable forms of Catholic devotion. At one level, the use of these stories as sermon exempla derived from the fact that in these early stories (quite unlike later stories) Robin was depicted as committed to the Mass and devoted to the Virgin Mary. The real value of these early stories about Robin Hood, however, is that they allow us to problematize two historiographical assumptions that continue to guide the thinking of English historians studying late medieval Catholicism. Thus, English historians (including the revisionist historians who have otherwise done so much to document the vitality of English Catholicism on the eve of the Reformation) continue to mimic official Catholic doctrine in suggesting that for English Catholics, Christ was the supernatural being who stood atop the Catholic pantheon, and that Mary and the saints were viewed only as intercessors with no independent power of their own. By contrast, the evidence from the Robin Hood stories (and from other stories used as sermon exempla) very explicitly depicts a rank ordering in which Mary not only had independent power, but independent power which eclipsed that of her Son.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Halluzinogen * Verwendung * Kulturanthropologie * Kunstproduktion

Zusammenfassung: Apart from the Inuits, who, until the arrival of the 'white man', were unable to cultivate plants because of the climate, it can be said that all cultures and human societies used psychotropic substances, and their usage can be considered universal. Although the use of certain psychotropic substances is associated with deviancy, multiple reasons can shed light on the drug phenomenon as a multifactorial reality. Among these reasons we can mention: medical use for health reasons, pleasure and sensorial experience; knowledge and exploration of the self; psychotherapy with LSD 25; war; support for religious practices; creation and artistic inspiration, etc. Through a literature review, this article explores the sociological and anthropological perspective in the field of psychotropic substances and their ties with the process of creativity and artistic inspiration (music, poetry, the arts, etc.). With a constructivist approach, a psychosocial perspective will be enabled to take a hold on certain social and cultural challenges in the context of psychotropic substance use and artistic creation.

Zusammenfassung: While I was doing fieldwork in a Montreal women's jail an unexpected detail emerged that intrigued me as a sociologist: the striking presence of the rosary. This detail is at the core of the present article. Conspicuous and discreet, exotic and trivial, the white plastic rosary given by volunteers to incarcerated women was everywhere. Without assuming an inherently religious character, and resisting the temptation to make of it something profound or curious, I ask in this article two simple questions: What is the rosary as an artefact? And how much about chaplaincy at the womens jail and Catholicism in contemporary Quebec is condensed in this detail? The answers to these questions instruct us on the context of the jail, the study of religion today, and the importance of artefacts.

In: Studies in religion. - 43. 2014, 2
Schlagwort (-Kette): Japan * Reiseführer * Sehenswürdigkeit * Buddhismus * Tempel * Kultur * Edo-Zeit

Zusammenfassung: This paper examines the commercial and recreational cultures of the urban Buddhist temple during Japan's Edo or early modern period (1603-1868) as depicted in popular guidebooks to famous places (meisho ki). Encouraged by advances in travel and communication, and a vibrant bourgeois culture, meisho guidebooks presented religious sites to the common public not as static, immobile spaces catering only to otherworldly spiritual concerns, but as open and elastic geographies simultaneously offering immediate material rewards and leisurely and commercial attractions to visitors. As unique media of local religion, guidebooks reflect how the reputation and allure of popular Buddhist temples among the general public were driven by the commodification of local legends and objects of worship, as well as material pleasures of religious spaces. This paper argues the importance of guidebooks in the production of public knowledge and expectation about religious sites in early modern Japan. These guides reveal material concerns and entertainment not as having been antithetical to the operation of Buddhist institutions, but rather as supports for the spread of Buddhist teachings and popularization of deity worship among the urban populace.
