Zusammenfassung: Current discussions on Religious Education (RE), both in Germany and England, focus on the quality of teaching and the professionality of teachers, but neglect the historical and institutional process of professionalisation upon which conceptions of teaching quality and teacher professionality hinge. This article seeks to provide definitional clarity by differentiating between individual and collective professionalisation; exploring teacher professionalisation in general and in the special case of RE; and operationalising the concept of RE teacher professionalisation for the purposes of planned historical and international comparative research. A threefold conceptualisation of professionalisation is proposed, consisting of the following inter-related levels: (1) initial and continuing professional development; (2) professional self-organisation and professional politics; and (3) professional knowledge. The breadth, complexity and significance of the historical and institutional processes associated with the professionalisation of RE teachers at each of these levels is described and discussed. It is argued that further historical and international comparative research on these lines would contribute a broader and deeper understanding of the presuppositions of RE teacher professionality beyond current debates.

Zusammenfassung: What professionalisation means has to be clarified in relation to the terms profession, professionality and professionalism. Is it about an occupation becoming a profession or about the individual development of professionality or about the formation of a professional identity? These questions are discussed systematically from the point of view of general educational science, complemented by a historical view of the development of teacher education and training in Germany. It is no surprise that the conceptualisation of professionalisation is contested. Against this background the importance of a clear conceptual basis is emphasised both for national and especially for international-comparative research.

Zusammenfassung: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the research literature on continuing professional development and School Improvement demonstrate that teachers who have the opportunity to develop knowledge of practice by integrating theory and practice have a positive impact on student attainment. It is argued in this article that we have sufficient weight of evidence to indicate that engaging in curriculum development as a participant in a community of inquiry is the optimal context for professional learning to develop knowledge of practice. However, establishing participation in communities of inquiry as integral to teachers professional learning remains a challenge and we need better ways of sharing and interrogating what we (think we) know. Examples of experiments in practice to promote professional learning and make a difference in the Religious Education classroom, are used to indicate what has worked and what has not and what we might do next.

Schlagwort (-Kette): England * Religionslehrer * Berufung * Professionalisierung * Deprofessionalisierung
Subject heading (chain): England * Religion teacher * Vocation (Calling) * Professionalization * Deprofessionalisierung

Zusammenfassung: This paper draws on an AHRC/ESRC funded, three-year multi-dimensional study of the political, cultural and pedagogical practices of religious education (Project AH/F009135/1). More specifically, it draws on that material to help understand the challenges to a sense of professional identity amongst UK religious education teachers. The empirical findings are here located in and shed light on prior discussions of the extent to which teachers in general are to be considered professional. These prior discussions have seen the idea of teacher professionalism come under sustained attack with the conflation of the conceits of professional, vocation and occupation, and the opening section of the paper tries to understand how this has come to pass. This concern with professional identity is subsequently pursued into the domain of religious education and the ways in which, amongst other concerns, the rise of a deracinated examination process and the neglect of religious literacy have contributed significantly to the diminution of the religious education teacher as a professional.

Zusammenfassung: The article draws on a series of qualitative studies undertaken between 1997 and 2014 in order to contribute to knowledge of, and debate about, Religious Education(RE) and professionalism from the perspective of teachers of RE. The findings of research undertaken with successive cohorts of English trainee and newly qualified teachers is used to explore their understandings and experiences of, and concerns about being professional. An international perspective is provided by research on experienced teachers of RE in six European countries, conducted during the REDCo Project of 20062009. Contextualisation of research findings in relation to education policies and debates provides a picture of the issues that teachers and teacher educators were responding between 1997 and 2014 and indicates how past and current understandings of RE and professionalism can come together in the practice and views of RE teachers. The article highlights the need for teachers to reflect on the relationship between their personal and professional lives and argues that trainee teachers require the kind of opportunities for reflection and specialist support that are provided in institutions of higher education.

Zusammenfassung: This article summarises the state of comparative historical research in the field of religious education. After describing a range of purposes to be fulfilled by comparative studies, it categorises a number of studies written in either English, French or German according to their methodological approach and subject focus. As a result, a three-dimensional map of comparative research is drawn. The survey shows that comparative research is of increasing importance within the context of globalisation and the Europeanisation of education policy and pluralism.

Zusammenfassung: Atheism is skeptical towards gods, and atheology advances philosophical positions defending the reasonableness of that rejection. The history of philosophy encompasses many unorthodox and irreligious movements of thought, and these varieties of unbelief deserve more exegesis and analysis than presently available. Going back to philosophys origins, two primary types of atheology have dominated the advancement of atheism, yet they have not cooperated very well. Materialist philosophies assemble cosmologies that leave nothing for gods to do, while skeptical philosophies find conceptions of god to be too unintelligible or unsupported by evidence to warrant credibility. The origins and genealogies of these two atheologies are sketched and compared over many centuries down to present-day atheism, which still displays signs of this internecine divide between confident naturalists and agnostic skeptics.

Zusammenfassung: In theological and philosophical circles, religious experience has often been described in terms of a direct encounter with the supernatural that exceeds the possibilities of normal human experience. More recently, however, select scholars have endeavored to explore the respects in which ordinary aesthetic experiences might serve as a site for mediated encounters with the divine. In this paper, I will argue that any attempt to establish the legitimacy of both direct and aesthetic religious experiences depends upon their placement within a larger context, which recognizes the sense in which all forms of ordinary human experience may mediate an experience of God. In order to bolster this claim, I will begin with a critical assessment of the relevant work of Alvin Plantinga and Mark Wynn, who respectively offer accounts of direct and aesthetic religious experience. I will then show that neither account fully evades two main objections that tend to be leveled against accounts of religious experience. Following this discussion, I will develop an account of the way all ordinary human experiences may mediate religious experience, in conversation with Thomas Aquinas. Far from precluding narrower accounts of religious experience as direct or aesthetic, this account includes them in a way that makes it possible to determine their validity.

Zusammenfassung: Humes Dialogues give one of the most elegant presentations of the Problem of Evil ever written. But often overlooked is that Humes problematic takes the form of a dilemma, with the traditional Problem representing only one horn. The other is what Hume calls mysticism, a position that avoids the Problem of Evil by maintaining that God is wholly other, and that God is therefore good in a fashion that mere humans simply cannot fathom. Mysticism is not the denial of Gods moral perfection defended by Philos positing of an indifferent deity. Nor is it an ad hoc final theistic entrenchment meant to stave off the Problem of Evil at any cost. Mysticism is, in fact, a position that Hume takes quite seriously and helped shape theism as it was practiced in Humes day. This paper studies Humes relationship with mysticism. First, it will recast the Problem of Evil as Hume intended, as only part of the larger theistic dilemma of choosing between anthropomorphism and mysticism. Once this polarization is understood and the respective consequences of adopting either of the two opposites is traced out, I locate Humes genuine theism as significantly lying between these two extremes.

In: International journal of philosophy and theology. - 76. 2015, 1

Subject heading (chain): Westphal, Merold * Abolition of

Zusammenfassung: Merold Westphals method often consists in recontextualizing, or appropriating, various sources in order to either make his own argument or to make others arguments seem self-evident. This method is especially noteworthy in his use of Aufhebung, a term which he initially discovers in his early work on Hegel. Westphal will eventually appropriate this term and, as this article will show, utilize it throughout his other academic works, particularly in his reading of Kierkegaard, for many an anti-dialectical thinker. This article further explores Westphals use of the term in order to reveal that his utilization of the term extends beyond Hegels own original intention and that, in doing so, Westphal creates something quite unique and separate from the term itself: a Westphalian Aufhebung.

Zusammenfassung: The perfection account of atonement is discussed, under which Christ, on the cross, completed the perfection of human nature, establishing the full perfection of loving filial obedience, offering to the Father a perfected humanity, where these features were fundamental to the atonement. A basic perfection account is first set out. Two additional elements of the perfection account are then discussed: first, that Christ established a perfect victory over evil in our humanity; second, that on the cross Christ put to death the pull to the self-life in our humanity. Reparation is then discussed. Finally, some critical questions are addressed.

Zusammenfassung: This paper explores the common ground in the views on natural law, justice and sociopolitical development in Hume and Spinoza. Spinoza develops a radically revisionary position in the natural law debate, building upon the bold equation of right and power. Hume is best interpreted as offering a skepticalempirical reworking of traditional natural law theories, which maintains much of the practical purport of these theories, while providing it with a new, metaphysically less firm, but also less problematic, foundation. What the two philosophers have in common is that they formulate realist revisions of the natural law tradition in the light of their more general naturalistic, secular philosophical commitments. Both philosophers, moreover, point to the slow development of mans insight in the laws of nature, arising through a gradual accumulation of experiential insights. These insights are never wholly liberated from the historical and imaginative perspective in which they arise. Accordingly, although rational progress brings the systems of justice and politics of different groups of people closer to each other, they necessarily retain, sometimes fundamentally incompatible, divergences. In the tradition of Machiavellian political realism, therefore, both Spinoza and Hume plead for judging political orders according to their own merits: do they, in their own specific ways, bring about a sufficient degree of order and liberty?

Zusammenfassung: This article offers broad lessons for ways to rethink the tangled relation among religion, modernity, and the secular. After characterizing what I mean by theories of secularization and how these theories have dominated our accounts of British romanticism, I consider two poems one by Coleridge, the other by Wordsworth that disrupt the view that British Romanticism replaces God with nature and discipline with unencumbered freedom. I conclude by suggesting that when we disclose the language and ways of religion and practice in British Romanticism, we make more apparent its political and environmental dimensions.

A reader of those works will see that becoming aware of your eternal validity is a prerequisite for becoming both Judge Williams ethical man and Johannes de Silentios knight of faith, but the same reader is likely to be unsure just what it means to become aware of yourself in your eternal validity. In this paper, I discuss and critique various accounts of the concept of the eternal validity of the self. Then, I offer an account of that notion which proceeds from careful attention to Judge Williams use of the phrase in Either/Or. Finally, I connect my account with some of Kierkegaards writings beyond Either/Or.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Jaspers, Karl * Geschichtsphilosophie * Achsenzeit * Entmythologisierung
Subject heading (chain): Jaspers, Karl * Philosophy of history * Achsenzeit * Demythologizing

Zusammenfassung: Karl Jasperss axial age thesis refers to a demythologizing revolution in worldviews that took place in the first millennium bce. Although his philosophy has been pejoratively described as Werk ohne Wirkung, this idea has attracted considerable scholarly attention in recent years. This article aims to critically engage with the very notion of the axial age by looking first at contextual issues, then at the key claims Jaspers makes, before examining the actuality of the thesis and the problem of its characterization as an age. The conclusion is that Jasperss attempt to unify the complex processes of demythologization under the notion of the axial age has produced a myth, and that this continues to have consequences today.

Subject heading (chain): Action theory * Evil (Wickedness)

Zusammenfassung: Most contemporary action theorists deny the possible existence of intentionally evil actions or diabolic agency. The reason for this is a normative interpretation of agency that appears to be motivated by action theoretic concerns, where agents are conceived as necessarily acting sub specie bonie or under the guise of the good. I argue that there is nothing in human agency to motivate this view and that diabolic evil is not at odds with inherent features of our nature.

Zusammenfassung: We aim to further develop and evaluate the prospects of a uniquely Islamic extension of the Standard Aquinas/Calvin model. One obstacle is that certain Quranic passages such as Surah 8:4344 apparently suggest that Muslims have reason to think that Allah might be deceiving them. Consistent with perfect/maximally good being theology, Allah would allow such deceptions only if doing so leads to a greater good, so such passages do not necessarily give Muslims reason to doubt Allahs goodness. Yet the possibility of deception of the faithful threatens to provide a subjective defeater for the (epistemic) reliability of their cognitive faculties. (Even if Allah can be morally good while deceiving, how do you know you arent being deceived for a greater good on a more macro level, such as about the nature of the Quran?) Similar in structure to Alvin Plantingas Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism (EAAN), this defeater threatens to undermine all of a Muslims warrant claims. We consider and evaluate the reply that there are other Quranic passages and/or additional conceptual resources in the Islamic tradition that provide grounds for thinking that Gods faithfulness or truthfulness is more centrally and securely embedded in a Muslims noetic structure than such doubts. Specifically, we will argue that under certain conditions, there exists a subjective defeater for some Muslims that, unlike McNabbs approach, isnt based off of the proper function condition but Plantingas truth aimed condition.

Zusammenfassung: It is commonplace to describe households as the primary social structures out of which the Jesus movement developed in its initial decades. However, the model of a Jesus movement originating from familial networks, and mostly set within domestic architecture, no longer accounts adequately for the data, and reects contemporary Western cultural settings where religion is imagined as primarily located within the private setting. Taking the earliest population of Christ-believers in Corinth as a test case, this article pursues an alternative model, one that focuses on streets and neighborhoods as the basic social unit.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Evangelien * Jesus Christus * Geschichtlichkeit * Methodologie * Kollektive Erinnerung * Formgeschichte
Subject heading (chain): Gospels * Jesus Christ * Historicity * Methodology * Collective remembrance * Form criticism

Zusammenfassung: The article argues that current debates over method in historical Jesus studies reveal two competing models for how to use the gospel tradition in order to approach the historical Jesus. These models differ over their treatments of the narrative frameworks of the gospels and, concomitantly, their views of the development of the Jesus tradition. A first model, inspired by form criticism and still advocated today, attempts to attain a historical Jesus behind the interpretations of early Christians. A second model, inspired by advances in historiography and memory theory, posits a historical Jesus who is ultimately unattainable, but can be hypothesized on the basis of the interpretations of the early Christians, and as part of a larger process of accounting for how and why early Christians came to view Jesus in the ways that they did. Advocating the latter approach to the historical Jesus and responding to previous criticism, this article argues further that these two models are methodologically and epistemologically incompatible. It therefore challenges the suggestion that one can affirm the goals of the second model while maintaining the methods of the first model.

In: Journal for the study of the New Testament. - 38. 2016, 4
Schlagwort (-Kette): Apostelgeschichte * Vision * Sehen * Hören
Subject heading (chain): Acts of the Apostles * Vision * Sight * Hearing

Zusammenfassung: The theme of sight plays a central role throughout the book of Acts. While some scholars have identied this theme, especially with respect to visions, they typically overlook the intersection of sight and audition. This article argues that Luke pairs seeing with hearing and emphasizes the sense of hearing to an even greater degree. The article rst addresses sight and visions in Acts and then focuses on Stephens vision in Acts 7. This is the one vision in Acts that does not involve divinely bestowed words, yet it still betrays Lukes preference for hearing and speaking Gods word. The article then explores key themes that emerge from Stephens vision regarding the visual and verbal modes of perception in Acts as a whole. Overall, Lukes emphasis on the spoken word reects his reliance on Jewish scriptural traditions that likewise highlight listening as a key epistemological posture.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Lukasevangelium * Apostelgeschichte * Redaktion * Kontrastive Stilistik
Subject heading (chain): Luke (Gospel) * Acts of the Apostles * Redaction * Kontrastive Stilistik

Zusammenfassung: Differences of style between the seams and summaries of Luke and those of Acts have been detected by Patricia Walters (2009). Using the same method (chi-square), but different criteria, still shows significant differences. Dividing her samples and re-testing them reaches very similar results. A third test, this time multivariate (using 30 criteria and including more of Luke and Acts), again shows up a noticeable divergence between the two sets of seams and summaries. A fourth test adds samples from Mark, Dionysius and others. The primary contrast places Mark well to the left and Dionysius well to the right. Samples from Luke are nearer Mark, those of Acts nearer Dionysius. The seams and summaries of Luke are again noticeably distant from those of Acts, the latter being very near to samples from Dionysius. These results support the case made by Walters for serious divergence between these presumably more editorial sections of Luke and Acts.

Schlagwort (-Kette): Offenbarung des Johannes * Gastmahl * Symposion * Metapher

Zusammenfassung: Food and dining references have generally been treated individually in the Apocalypse rather than as a motif of the text. Reading for typical daily practices such as eating and drinking rather than specific local or historical references or biblical allusions provides a window into the social world of the audience and the ideological agenda of the text. This article argues that the text employs banqueting traditions that would be familiar to Christian communities in urban Asia Minor. John uses aspects of the literary symposium tradition to construct the moral character of several actors in the text and to connect his opponents in the Asian communities with the satanic forces.

Zusammenfassung: Thomas Aquinas's treatments of analogical predication of the divine names have generated perennial and polarizing debates. This article expands the framework for analysis by examining the divine names through the lens of final causality and the convertibility of being and good, stressing agathological participation as crucial for understanding the metaphysical foundation for analogical predication of the divine names. This approach specifies how analogical predication of the divine names functions as an intermediary end subordinate to the ultimate end of the beatific vision and how the ultimate end of the beatific vision causes the intermediate end of analogical predication.

Zusammenfassung: The article discusses the perils of embracing a historicized Christology. The author claims that those theologians who advance a historicized Christology undermine Jesus' true divinity and fail to uphold key aspects of the church's Christology. He presents the more traditional view of the incarnation offered by Thomas F. Torrance and then comparing his dynamic view of Christ's divinity.

Subject heading (chain): John (of the Cross,Saint) * God (Theology of) * Spirituality

Zusammenfassung: Juan de la Cruz is often read as the exponent of apophaticism par excellence and as primarily concerned with spiritual experience and ascetical instruction. Arguably, he is neither. His doctrine of God attests to both the cataphatic and systematic character of his thought. Via examination of key attributes of divine nature such as simplicity, infinity, wisdom, beauty and love, both the scriptural and Thomistic roots of his theology are revealed. His systematic theology is inseparable from his spiritual theology and spiritual teaching, because the ground of both is a doctrine of God that describes the telos of spiritual aspiration.

Zusammenfassung: The Franciscan theologian Duns Scotus (ca.1266-1308) taught the puzzling doctrine that had Adam not sinned, the totus Christus would have been immediately glorified. While the Scotist commentarial tradition developed this idea in several surprising ways, most twentieth-century Scotists rejected it. This article uses a modern philosophy of counterfactual statements to evaluate the interpretive claims of F. X. Pancheri and Juniper Carol, two prominent twentieth-century Scotists, and presents a new understanding of the traditional Scotist notion that had Adam not sinned, the Word would have become incarnate in impassible flesh.
