Resumo: | The article analyses two texts by Isaac of Nineveh (7th century) where he speaks explicitly about various kinds of literature apt or unapt for reading by hermits. Focusing on the general context of these statements in the Eastern Syriac monasticism of the time in question and especially on their significance in the works of Isaac the article explores Isaac of Nineveh’s attitude towards reading and education of hermits. Special attention is paid to the problem of monastic controversies concerning religious matters and to Isaac’s attempts of settling them |
