In the first 4 articles Thomas binds the morality in a consistent cognitive approach to the conscience and the will of the acting subject. Then he tries to relate this concept of morality to the difference between a good and an erroneous conscience. This is successful in the case of the question whether someone is bound by an erroneous conscience (5), but it seems to be unsuccessful in the case of the question whether someone with an erroneous conscience can have a will that is good. Thomas may have been aware of the problem. He discusses in detail in articles 7 and 8 two special topics entirely within his sense of the concept of morality that he has developed in articles 1-4. Article 9 brings into play the conformity of the human will with the will of God as the kernel of morality, which leads on to the important article 10. There Thomas relativizes the difference between a right and an erroneous conscience and responds to every problem raised in articles 5 and 6, dealing with the question systematically and taking it to a higher and comprehensive level of reflection. | ||

Le texte est particulièrement intéressant, non seulement en raison de sa dimension systématique mais aussi parce que le sixième des dix articles de la Question sort, en quelque sorte, des limites du cadre et est, apparemment, en contradiction avec le reste. Dans les quatre premiers articles, Thomas, selon une approche cognitive cohérente, rattache la moralité à la conscience et à la volonté du sujet acteur. Puis il essaie de rattacher ce concept de moralité à la différence entre une conscience bonne et une conscience erronée. Il y réussit dans le cas où quelqu’un est lié par une conscience erronée (5) mais semble ne pas y arriver dans le cas où celui qui a une conscience erronée peut avoir une volonté bonne. Thomas a pu se rendre compte du problème. Dans les articles 7 et 8, il discute en détail deux points qui font entièrement partie de la compréhension du concept de moralité qu’il a développée dans les articles 1 à 4. L’article 9 met au cœur de la moralité la conformité de la volonté humaine avec la volonté de Dieu. Cela conduit à l’important article 10. Là, Thomas relativise la différence entre une conscience droite et une conscience erronée et répond à tous les problèmes soulevés dans les articles 5 et 6, abordant la question de manière systématique pour la porter à un niveau de réflexion plus élevé et plus général. | ||
