Topics discussed include the reputation of the early Schleiermacher as both a Spinozist and a determinist, the espousal by the later Schleiermacher of a metaphysics of substance, and his engagement with the work of German philosophers Immanuel Kant and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Mentioned also are Schleiermacher's early works, including "Christian Faith," "On Freedom," and "Monologen."
