AB Une approche structurelle et théologique de la controverse d'Ézéchiel 18 démontre que ce texte vise moins à établir avec exactitude la doctrine de la rétribution individuelle qu'à débloquer une impasse et à inviter à une conversion. Les exilés, auxquels Dieu s'adresse, se prétendent victimes des fautes de leurs « pères ». Cela les enferme dans le fatalisme et les empêche de voir leur propre culpabilité. Dieu affirme que les gens de la génération actuelle ne paient pas pour les révoltes des précédentes, mais à cause de leurs agissements incorrects. La reconnaissance de leur responsabilité peut les amener à retourner à Dieu par un changement radical (« en se faisant un coeur neuf et un esprit neuf ») et leur ouvre un avenir d'espoir et de vie.
AB A rhetorical and theological approach to the controversy found in Ezekiel 18 demonstrates that the point of this text is not to establish with exactitude the doctrine of individual retribution, but to unlock an impasse and to call to conversion. The exiles, whom God is addressing, consider themselves as the victims of their ancestors’ sins. They are thus caught in a fatalism which prevents them to see their own guilt. God states that those of the current generation are not punished for the revolts of the previous generations, but rather for their own. Acknowledging their responsibility offers the opportunity to return to God by a radical change (« making themselves a new heart and a new spirit ») and opens for them a future of hope and life.
