Riepilogo:Luther's doctrine of the unfree will and its interpretations, as found in the context of current philosophical debate on free will, are presented and compared. Even if Luther could be called a theological compatibilist, serious problems remain. These can be described as a trilemma. Either free will must be postulated (in contradiction with the Reformation); or the mercy of God must be restricted; or a dualistic eschatology must be abandoned in favor of the apocatastasis.
