AB This article argues that Islam has been perceived and introduced in the West as a new threat to international security - replacing the former communist threat. The West, especially the U.S., preoccupied with fundamentalism has neglected to recognize the diversity of Islamic groups. Furthermore, the West has failed to notice any reformist and democratic tendencies in the Middle East as a case study of the American-Iranian relations shows. (DÜI-Mjr)
