| Zusammenfassung: | In recent discussions of the role of biblical criticism and its findings the question of the canon of Scripture has become one of special concern. There is an increasingly apologetic attempt to distinguish between what can be gained by historical and literary criticism on the one hand, and the interpretation of the Bible as Holy Scripture on the other. Here, 'canonicity' as differentia specifica of biblical literature is brought into focus. On closer examination the systematic implications of such attempts cannot be regarded as adequately considered. Such a development must be treated with greatest caution – not least against the background of the ideas concerning the inspiration and the exegesis of Scripture as found in Vatican II's constitution 'Dei Verbum'. For in DV 11 and 12 any exegesis reflecting on 'canonicity' is directed back to historical criticism (N. Lohfink). Thus it is without any theological or biblical-hermeneutical justification if one starts looking for a narrowed-down ecclesiological principle of exegesis and unity beyond the christological focus of the individual biblical author's witnessing. Unity and unification – in a NT sense – happen – as St John's Gospel makes clear – from the basis of christological witnessing. The unity of witnessing, and thus the unity of those who are Christ's witnesses through discipleship can only be conceived within the framework of a functional reference to this foundation. |
