The author investigates the background of the Hindu-Muslim rioting, the demolition of a mosque in Ayodhya by a trained group of Hindu militants, the symbolic nexus of Ramayana (Hindu epic), used by the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), that precipitated Hindu-Muslim violence in 1990, Rama in Indian history and the problematic relationship between history and political action.
