Riepilogo:The author investigates some of the experiences gained by the Indian state of Travancore (now largely incorporated into Kerala) with regard to community-based reservation. According to him, these experiences (especially from the 1930s) show that a system of communal reservation is most unlikely to succeed in satisfying the demands of even the major communities. The author briefly refers to the general elections held in India in 1991, when communal reservation became a prominent issue. (DÜI-Sen)
