RT Article T1 American security policy and Middle East peace JF American Arab affairs IS 32 SP 49 OP 53 A1 Carlucci, Frank C. 1930-2018 LA English PB Council YR 1990 UL https://www.ixtheo.de/Record/163178949X AB The speaker lists 4 areas of US interest in the Middle East: 1) Geographically - the Middle East is a land bridge between 3 continents. 2) The security of Israel. 3) Oil, and its impact on trade, finances and the dollar. 4) Social and political dynamics in the Muslim world (unpredictability of fundamentalists). He notes that even after the disintegration of Communism Soviet interest in the area is undiminished. The intifada has brought about change by emphasizing the Palestinian issue. The speaker urges US support for Palestinian elections, Israeli-Palestinian dialogue and negotiations on the final status of the Occupied Territories and Palestinian rights. The basis for a peace settlement are UN resolutions 242 and 338. Israel should stop the expulsion of Palestinians from the Occupied Territories and their resettlement policy. However, Israel must feel secure to take the necessary risks, and the goal of peace in the region must be the primary US objective.
