Sumario: | This article examines the career of John Bunyan, comparing important emphases in his life and ministry to emphases associated with the "modern evangelicalism" that historian David Bebbington argues was birthed in the 18th century Evangelical Revival. Bunyan was revered by many 18th and 19th century evangelicals, with his seminal work, The Pilgrim's Progress, especially treasured. There are significant continuities between Bunyan and later figures such as the 19th century Baptist preacher, Charles Haddon Spurgeon. There are also, however, real and important discontinuities. So, for example, Bunyan and Spurgeon approached the question of assurance of salvation quite differently. Moreover, evangelicals like Spurgeon would sometimes refashion Bunyan in their own image, remoulding his thought so it addressed their own concerns. Highlighting the differences between Bunyan and later evangelicals adds weight to argument that the Evangelical Revival gave birth to a new movement. There were of course many continuities between modern evangelicalism and earlier Protestantism, but significant discontinuities as well. |
