520 |a In this article, I propose a theological interpretation of the word "expired" (ἐξέπνευσεν) in Mark 15:37, 39 and maintain that it is an allusion to the gift of the Spirit. Here one considers the choice of the verb "to expire" (ἐξέπνευσεν) by Mark, a word cognate with the word Ttve0|aa, to suggest a reference to the Spirit. Some authors have indeed suggested such a reference to the Spirit, but with a punitive sense of judgment and destruction. Those interpretations, however, do not explain well the other details provided in the narrative. I propose, rather, a revelatory function in the allusion to the Spirit. This interpretation explains in a fuller way several details of the Marcan narrative, such as the tearing of the temple veil (15:38), the centurion's confession (15:39), and the announcement of the baptism in the Holy Spirit (1:8); it also agrees with the understanding of the role of the Spirit of God in the biblical tradition as revelatory agent and with the interpretation of the death of Jesus in the Gospel of John (John 19:30).
