Description
Résumé:On the eve of the Reformation, when each day numerous Masses were celebrated, it was very rare to receive communion. Only nuns communicated more than three times a year, and the practice of frequent communion was limited to monasteries of strict observance. This rareness was not always due to a lack of fervour; on the contrary, it was the fear to receive the Body of Christ unworthily that brought about an irrepressible awe in the minds of pious people. Spiritual communion made it possible to avoid each risk of sacrilege and nevertheless to venerate the Eucharist.
