Riepilogo:Little is known about Clement’s life. His literary work he discusses in his Stromateis. Confronted with all human knowledge, he renders it serviceable for the path to Christian understanding. He criticises the eclecticism of his opponents, which fragments the truth and gives an impression of the disunity of the whole. By contrast, he defends his own eclectic method, arguing that through selection and collection of material he brings his readers to further and deeper insight into the unity of divine wisdom. This is a project well suited to the pluralism of intellectual life in the Alexandrian metropolis with its many libraries and educational institutions.
