Sumario:How can the gospel of Matthew propose such a strong emphasis on the mercy of God on the one hand, and on judgment and eternal punishment and hell on the other? After examining several unsatisfactory proposals for a solution offered by other scholars, the author suggest that Matthew's unmerciful judgment scenes all occur in parables. Therefore, the judgment has to be interpreted in the context of the literary strategy of parables.
