Resumo:The Dutch priest-politician Siegfried Stokman (1903-1970) was a prominent figure in the debates on the place of church and religion within society after the Second World War. However, historians have ignored the ways in which shifting conceptions of the public role of religion have pressurized Stokman's political position. This article examines Stokman's effort to give new meaning to his position within changing Catholic political networks between 1945 and 1969, using a hitherto neglected body of letters available in Nijmegen (KDC), The Hague (National Archives) and Utrecht (The Utrecht Archives and The Franciscan Archives). It is argued that Stokman maintained his function as priest-politician due to his pragmatic style of politics. In this way, the study adds insights to recent research on the interaction between politico-religious leaders and shifting conceptions of the role of church and religion within Dutch post-war society.
