Leur étude entre le début du ive siècle et la fin du vie siècle reflète une grande variété de situations et de discours. Pendant tout le ive siècle, la transformation des temples en églises inspire aux auteurs antiques un discours ambigu, qui tend plus à la masquer qu'à la mettre en valeur. Après le milieu du ve siècle, la conversion est plus affirmée, tantôt dans le registre de la conquête, tantôt dans celui d'une succession harmonieuse qui fait apparaître l'appropriation d'éléments « païens » par les chrétiens. Parallèlement, on observe le déplacement entre un contrôle exclusivement impérial et un contrôle par les autorités locales. La complexité de la conversion des lieux de culte reflète celle du processus de conversion de la société romaine dans son ensemble. | ||
| 520 | |a The study of the transformation of public temples into churches allows an appreciation of the relationship between political power and religious conversion, for these temples were under the jurisdiction of the imperial or municipal authorities. Over the period from the beginning of the fourth century and the end of the sixth century there was a great variety of situations and narratives in their regard. Throughout the fourth century, ancient writers who mentioned the conversion of temples into churches tend to downplay or conceal the process of transformation rather than emphasize it. After the middle of the fifth century, narratives about conversion were more assertive, presenting it sometimes as conquest, sometimes as a harmonious succession illustrating the appropriation of "pagan" elements by Christians. During the same period, a shift from exclusively imperial control to control by local authorities occurred. The complexity of the conversion of places of worship hence reflected the complexity of the process of conversion of Roman society as a whole. | ||
