Σύνοψη: | The anti-foreigners Boxer Rebellion of summer 1900 provoked the death of about one hundred English Protestant missionaries in the North-East regions of China. Several letters and diaries written by the victims just before dying were soon collected and published in London by the China Inland Mission, conferring to the dead missionaries the title of "martyrs". The analysis of these documents led to a definition of "martyrdom" in the Protestant missionary context between the 19th and 20th century, which highlights the propagandistic value not only of the martyrologies but also of the very martyrial act. |
