| Riepilogo: | This essay is set in the context of contemporary movements of theological restatement, liturgical renewal, and ecumenical rapprochement. As its title implies, the place and purpose of worship in ecumenical contexts is sometimes ambiguous. This is true whether the setting of worship occurs in purposeful ecumenical dialogue or on occasions of ecumenical celebration or, finally, even within the regular worship of the Christian assembly in its various traditions. Some of the issues involved are investigated through the medium of three specific episodes of the ecumenical movement: (1) an instance of ecumenical worship between Anglicans and Roman Catholics during a Cursillo in the immediate aftermath of Vatican II, (2) a delineation and assessment of the place of worship in the Consultation on Church Union, and (3) the largely unexpected discovery of the centrality of worship in overcoming traditional ecumenical impasses in Lutheran-Anglican dialogue. The essay concludes by asserting that, after a half-century of ecumenical engagement, progress toward unity depends specifically upon a discriminate common worship (communio in sacris). Effective formation of the will to unity is enabled when such worship is at the heart of the ecumenical project. |
