AB Dans le monde des sédentaires du Proche-Orient antique, la viande de chameau, comme celles de l’âne et des autres bêtes de somme, est dépréciée et réservée aux pauvres, mais les sociétés nomades la consomment et l’estiment. Alors qu’elle est interdite par la Loi juive, son statut reste incertain aux yeux des chrétiens, mais les musulmans la mangent volontiers. Ainsi, elle fonctionne comme un puissant marqueur d’identités sociales, ethniques et religieuses. La viande de l’onagre, animal sauvage parfois considéré comme un gibier et parfois comme un âne, est elle aussi problématique.
AB In the world of the sedentaries of the ancient Middle East, camel meat, like that of the donkey and other beasts of burden, is depreciated and reserved for the poor, but the nomadic societies consume and estimate it. While it is prohibited by the Jewish law, its status remains uncertain in the eyes of Christians, but Muslims eat it willingly. Thus, it functions as a powerful marker of social, ethnic and religious identities. The meat of the onager, a wild animal sometimes considered as a game and sometimes as a donkey, is also problematic.
AB   خلاصة = كان لحم الإبل، كما لحوم الحمير والدواب الأخرى، متدني القيمة ومخصصاً للفقراء لدى الحضر في الشرق الأدنى القديم؛ غير أن المجتمعات البدوية استهلكته وحظي بتقديرها. وفي حين أنه محرم في الشريعة اليهودية، تبقى مكانته غير مؤكدة في نظر المسيحيين، ويأكله المسلمون عن طيب خاطر. ويؤدي بهذا وظيفته كعلامة قوية للهويات الاجتماعية والعرقية والدينية. كما يمثل الأخدر (الحمار البري الآسيوي)، وهو حيوان بري يعتبر طريدة أحياناً وحماراً أحياناً أخرى، إشكالية بدوره.
