Описание
Итог:A leading Christian philosopher of the so-called 'Baghdad School', Yaḥyā Ibn 'Adī, wrote a number of works defending and explaining the doctrine of the Trinity. In one of these he quotes and rebuts a refutation of the Trinity by the earlier, Muslim philosopher al-Kindī, which is known only through the quotations provided by Ibn ῾Adī. This study shows that both thinkers give arguments that are paralleled in their other works, notably in al-Kindī’s On First Philosophy and Ibn 'Adī’s Treatise on Unity. Particular attention is given to Ibn 'Adī’s attempts to diagnose failings in al-Kindī’s refutation by displaying his superior grasp of Aristotelian logic and metaphysics. The study concludes by offering the first modern translation of Ibn ῾Adī’s refutation of al-Kindī.
