In 1556 a translated version of Cranmer’s fifth recantation was quickly suppressed by the Marian Privy Council and was followed, shortly after, by a more comprehensive edition of Cranmer’s recantations produced by the Queen’s Printer, John Cawood. This article argues for a hitherto unrecognized interrelationship between these editions. In viewing these texts together, the article shows that not only was the Marian regime willing to both promote and censor the printed word, but that it did so in order to control its narrative of Cranmer’s final days and to discredit his reputation.
