Description
Résumé:During the Middle Ages, Paradise is a common destination in medieval travel stories because it was believed that the Garden of Eden was still on Earth and that it was located at some unexplored and isolated place. The difficulty for mortals to reach it led to its common description as situated on an island surrounded by obstacles which could only be surmounted by a long and difficult sea voyage. Trezenzonio and his voyage to Solstice Island belongs to this tradition, although it has a series of peculiarities that make it exceptional. In this article, we intend to reflect on the importance of the figures of the sea and the island in the path of the protagonist. Likewise, we will try to analyze the representations and the symbology that is transmitted to us in both spaces. Finally, this story will be contextualized alongside other of medieval texts related to the theme of the island of Paradise, seeking to explore the religious maritime imagery and what its origins could be.
