Résumé: | "His Eminence, Cardinal Dario Castrillion Hoyos, Prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, sent a letter to Bishop William Skylstad, President of the USCCB, concerning the distinction to be made between a merger of a parish with another parish or parishes and the suppression of a parish. Bishop Skylstad referred the letter to the USCCB's Committee on Canonical Affairs for their review. In his July 10, 2010 memorandum to the Bishops of the United States, Bishop Skylstad states that "Care must be taken...in implementing decisions about the merger or suppression of parishes. This is especially so in describing the rights that pertain to a parish as a juridical person under the Church's law." He goes on to stress that "in acting on matters of merger, dissolution, or suppression of parishes...due attention (should) be given to precision of expression about rights and responsibilities enjoyed by a parish as a public juridic person versus those rights and responsibilities that might pertain to the assembly of the faithful or individual members of it."
