The first section is a short inquiry into the understanding of red-hot iron in ancient philosophy of nature and the use of the example in the theological literature before Luther, including Origen, Bernhard of Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas, and Meister Eckhart.Luther himself uses ferrum ignitum as a simile in two theological topics. On the one hand, it is a simile of the living presence of God in Jesus Christ and in his word and sacrament.
