RT Article T1 Supererogatorische Ausdruckshandlung: ein Hinweis auf eine spezielle normativ-ethische Kategorie JF Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie VO 126 IS 4 SP 443 OP 454 A1 Witschen, Dieter 1952-2017 LA German PB Echter YR 2004 UL https://www.ixtheo.de/Record/176802507X AB When speaking about supererogatory acts, attention is usually focused on outstanding altruistic acts, which have a direct beneficial effect on others. No notice, however, is taken of the existence of supererogatory acts, which just express a person's attitude without achieving a direct effect. In phenomenological respect this category should not be overlooked so as to do justice to the conduct of someone like Janus Korczak, who, of his own accord and as a sign of his deep solidarity, accompanied orphans entrusted to his care to a concentration camp and to their death. In situations in which a person is deprived of the possibility of achieving a certain purpose he can, all the same, demonstrate his own moral attitude without being obliged to do so according to usual moral standards. Through such conduct he can, in a way transcending his duty, symbolize, on the one hand, his altruistic attitude, on the other hand, his personal ideals.
