Σύνοψη: | Within the past thirty years memory has become a new paradigm in cultural sciences. Besides individual memories, cultural and social memory today are categories along whose lines identity formation is imagined. Beginning with the biblical concept of memory this article shows that memory is not only remembrance of things passed but a process that invests history with meaning for a present. As such it becomes a profoundly theological category encompassing not only gift but also task. In dialogue with Paul Ricoer and Johann Baptist Metz in particular, the implications of such an understanding of memory are drawn out and placed in the contexts of theological reflection and identity formation within Christian life. |
