Résumé: | A particular emphasis of Pope John Paul II's pontificate was the recognition of certain political rights belonging to indigenous peoples. In particular, in Australia the Pope recognised that encouraging political reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous people is essential to religious mission. At Alice Springs in 1986 he gave impetus to a growing Catholic acceptance that promoting reconciliation is an important missionary duty. |
