520 |a The mural paintings at the bishop’s hall of Bergamo, the Aula della Curia (approx. 1220/30), have hitherto been regarded as merely subject to a Christological programme. This article argues that the paintings contain a further level of meaning as refl ections of a conflict of interest between the bishop and the commune of Bergamo grounded in the self-government claims of northern Italy’s late medieval cities. Within this setting, the paper will investigate how the traditional iconography deriving from different sacral and profane contexts is combined in a new manner taking into account the ongoing political changes as well as the functions of the hall as the bishop’s courtroom. In exploring these new visual strategies which often lead to complex allegorical and ambiguous layers of significance, the article will focus on the representation of the ‘Last Judgment”’ including the attached smaller scenes of law experts and a «Wheel of Fortune». It aims to show that the strategies applied intend to prevent the fading of the bishop’s power and to legitimate his juridical authority by drawing a visual analogy between himself and Christ judge.
