Résumé:Luther's attitude towards the punishment of the Anabaptists was marked by significant fluctuations. Lenient sentences were accompanied by harsher statements. These how ever can be attributed to different temporal phases usually triggered by distinctive historic events. In retrospect, the Wittenberg reformer was also partly to blame for the violent suppression of 16th century Anabaptism.
