Descripción
Sumario:The aim of this paper is to investigate the modernization process that occurred in Afro-Brazilian religions and the importance attributed to the written and visual production in the learning process of the devotees of the terreiro Santa Bárbara do Portão do Gelo (Ilê Axé Oyá Meguê or Terreiro de Xambá, as is better known). To this end, I use Nestor García Canclini's concept of hybridization, which conceives it as an unforeseen result of migratory processes of economic, communicational exchange, among others. From field investigations, I seek to demonstrate that xambazeiros perpetuate their tradition and their knowledge through hybrid and reconversion processes, to accompany the transformations required by the contemporary Afro-religious world.
