AB Este estudo apresenta uma proposta de interpretação de uma lenda de um povo indígena que vive na Amazônia, são os Tariana, isto é, os filhos do trovão. A narrativa foi preservada em um livro publicado no início do século passado: Lendas em Nheengatu e em Português. O fio condutor do enredo é mágico: lágrimas caem do céu sobre o rosto de uma jovem chamada Nhinhó e com isso ela se torna bela. Sua beleza, no entanto, será a sua tragédia. Como base epistemológica, usamos a teoria dos quatro elementos (terra, água, ar, fogo) de Gaston Bachelard, e nossa hipótese é a seguinte: A água é o elemento que sustenta a narrativa, principalmente através de suas metáforas.
AB The  present  study  seeks  to  interpret  the  legend  of  a  particular  indigenous  community  living  in  the Amazon:  the  Tariana,  i.e.,  the  children  of  the  thunder.  The  narrative  was  preserved  in  a  book published  last  century:  Legends  in  Nheengatu  and  in  Portuguese.  The  plot  possesses  a  magical orientation: the tears that fall from the sky over the face of a young girl called Nhinhóe transform her  into  a  beautiful  girl.  Her  beauty,  however,  is  the  sign  of  her  tragedy.  We  resort  to  Gaston Bachelard’s  the  theory  of  the four  elements  (earth, water, air, fire) as  our  basic  epistemological tool and  our  hypothesis  is  the  following:  the  water  is  the  elements  that  upholds  the  narrative  mainly through the use of metaphors.
