Assolutamente non scontata, la qualifica di sacro per la rappresentazione iconografica di un individuo, era al contrario oggetto di continui dibattiti e controversie, poiché la definizione di queste categorie cambiava e diversi erano gli agenti coinvolti in questo scambio. I ritratti mostrano che categorie come il sacro o il religioso, lungi dall’essere intrinseche a un’immagine, potevano piuttosto divenire proprio attraverso di essi oggetto di un processo di appropriazione, che coinvolgeva tanto la posizione della persona rappresentata, quanto la natura stessa della relazione tra sacro e profano. | ||

Rather than straightforward, the identification of a visual representation of an individual as sacred was subject to discussion and controversy, as the definition of these categories shifted and different agents became involved in the process. Portraits show that rather than immanent to an image, categories such as sacred or religious could be appropriated through portraits, influencing the standing of the person commemorated as well as the relationship between sacred and profane. | ||
