It is the fruit of a lifetime of engagement with the issue from the biblical scholar James Crenshaw, reminiscent of his Whirlpool of Torment (1984) but going beyond it in scope. In this book he establishes his credentials as a theologian of great maturity and yet his biblical scholarship shines through in the discussions of texts that appear in every chapter. He also draws on a rich literary heritage of writers and theologians to illustrate his points.
