| Résumé: | J. H. W. G. Liebeschuetz, at this stage something of an elder statesman of patristic studies, has decided to do a comparative study of the writings of two of the early church’s greatest figures: John Chrysostom and Ambrose of Milan. He takes as his premiss the fact that they both held remarkably similar views regarding the role of the Church within society and the importance of asceticism as a path towards salvation. However, Chrysostom ended his career and his life in exile, while Ambrose died a pillar of the Western church. |
