Sumario:Busch on Barth and Bethge on Bonhoeffer are now matched by an overdue and very welcome substantial biography of Bultmann, though now with a much greater distance between biographer and subject. Appropriate to one so completely immersed in his work (or rather, in the Sache), its primary focus is on his books and key articles, some of which are contextualized and briefly analysed, though with little criticism. Enough is said about the context and reception of The History of the Synoptic Tradition (1921, 3rd edition 1931), The Gospel of John (1941), and Theology of the New Testament (1948–51) to allow the main lines of Bultmann’s New Testament interpretation to stand out clearly.
