In his introductory section Troxel poses the question whether the prophets actually wrote anything, indeed whether they were able to write. He sets a high bar for literacy, in that it can be assumed only for a society in which the resources exist for the inexpensive dissemination of written material. This was not the case in ancient Israel, where the ability to write more than one’s name was limited to professional scribes. | ||
