As various political pundits have noted, American Catholics now constitute a critical swing vote even though their overall allegiance has been gradually shifting toward the Republican Party. Nevertheless, Catholic votes matter as they did in the recent presidential election where 54 percent went to the Protestant and pro-choice Barak Obama. Given the electoral importance of American Catholics, questions naturally arise about the determinants of their political behavior., Few observers inside or outside the Church need reminding that Catholics do not march in lockstep with Church leadership, even while that leadership does have influence.
