| Zusammenfassung: | Liberal democracy is often construed as setting in opposition two dimensions of life: public and private. But that conventional interpretation fails to appreciate that the promise of liberal democracy is to make public values private ones, and to give personal convictions public credence. That is the great challenge of liberal democracy—to cultivate a political culture in which personal convictions take root within the public values that bind citizens to themselves and to their state. |
