Pour la première fois le fondateur, le cardinal Etienne Conti, représentant du pape Innocent IV à Rome, est estimé comme il le mérite. Les images sont décryptées comme symboles de pouvoir. Le programme iconographique peut être reconstruit plus complètement que ce n'était possible jusqu'alors, compris d'une façon plus précise et replacé dans le contexte plus large des représentations de Sylvestre et Constantin. In order to shed new light upon the origin and the pictorial expression of the cycle of frescoes in the chapel of St. Sylvester in SS. Quattro Coronati, a synthetic view is offered of, among other things, the topography of the City of Rome, the relationship between this architectural complex and the Lateran, the liturgical calendar in the anteroom of the oratorium, the composition of the relics and the thematic content of the iconographical program; in this connection, previously unnoticed sources are also used. For the first time, the founder, Cardinal Stefano Conti, who was also the representative of Pope Innocent IV in Rome, receives due recognition. The paintings are interpreted as symbols of dominion. The iconographical program can now be reconstructed more comprehensively than ever before, allowing it to be understood more precisely and placed in the larger context of the representations of Sylvester and Constantine. | ||
