520 |a Mercy/compassion is a marginal issue in the pre-Christian Greek and Roman culture. In literature it appears sporadically with no positive moral value. Regarded negatively by the Stoics, it receives a minimum of attention only in the field of rhetoric. Christianity gradually imposes a new conception of mercy, which has at least four differences with the classical idea: it is not a marginal but a central topic, it is not forced but free, it is not an emotion but an act, it is not merited but gratuitous.
