AB De norske epitafietavlene har lenge vært et neglisjert forskningsfelt. I denne artikkelen analyseres det såkalte Humble-epitafiet i Stavanger domkirke, et av de mest storslåtte innenfor sjangeren. Sammenstillingen av innskrifter og portrettmaleri, sammen med ornamentikken og ikonografien på rammeverket, skaper et rikt og mangfoldig tolkningsrom. Den utdypende lesningen av en samtidig likpreken avdekker en teologisk livstolkning som er langt rikere enn det tradisjonelle inntrykket vi har av luthersk ortodoks teologi.
AB The Norwegian epitaphs have long been a neglected field of research. This article is an analysis of one of the most prominent of them, the so-called Humble Epitaph in the Cathedral of Stavanger. The combination of the inscriptions, portrait painting and carved framework enriched with ornaments and biblical iconography represent a unique possibility for interpretation. An investigation of a funeral sermon from the same milieu reveals a theological attitude far richer than what one would expect to find within orthodox theology.
