Riepilogo:This article will focus on a 17th-century engraved Esther scroll attributed to the celebrated artist and engraver Shalom Italia. Hitherto unknown to scholars and the general public, this scroll is preserved at the University Library in Geneva, and is composed of the ‘lion, lamb, and bear’ motif. It is one of only six other known scrolls of this type in the world. This scroll’s provenance and integration among Shalom Italia’s other decorated Esther scrolls will first be established, followed by the description of the engravings of the scroll. Lastly, a comparison of all six known scrolls of this group will attempt to establish the place of the Geneva scroll within the line of production of the other surviving ‘lion, lamb, and bear’ Esther scrolls. Beforehand, a brief history of the Hebrew manuscript collection of the University Library of Geneva will be revealed, shedding light on the relatively small yet richly diverse Hebrew manuscript legacy in Protestant Rome.
