RT Article T1 Louise Labe's Conditional Imperatives: Subversion and Transcendence of the Petrarchan Tradition JF The sixteenth century journal VO 21 IS 4 SP 523 OP 541 A1 Baker, Deborah Lesko LA English PB Sixteenth Century Journal Publishers, Inc. YR 1990 UL https://www.ixtheo.de/Record/1802330941 AB This study explores two of Louise Labe's most renowned sonnets in order to address her complex relationship to the Petrarchan tradition. A detailed examination of the rhetorical structure of these sonnets reveals that Labe subverts and transcends the ontological model of the poetic speaker in Petrarch as well as in her Lyonnais compatriot Maurice Sceve. Labe's poetic project is shown finally to replace the tortured and fragmented lyric speaker of her predecessors with a new, unified reconstitution of the poetic subject. DO 10.2307/2542185
