Descripción
Sumario:The German-Jewish philosopher Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) is not forgotten. A whole range of new publications document a lively interest in his critical idealism, formed in his engagements with Plato and Kant, as well as in contrast to other forms of idealism like that of Hegel. The various current readings are directed at basic questions regarding the foundation of logic, ethics, and aesthetics as well as his philosophy of religion »out of the sources of Judaism« in its impact on the theology of the time and how he compares with Franz Rosenzweig. As an »untimely contemporary« (Beiser) of Marx' materialism, Schopenhauer's pessimism, Wagner's aestheticism and Nietzsche's atheism, Cohen developed a systematic philosophy in the hope to restore the unity of culture.Frederick C.
