| Σύνοψη: | This paper examines Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero’s understanding of and response to violence during his episcopal ministry. It proposes that Romero’s ministry draws from and brings closer together two apparently disparate approaches that Christians have enlisted across history in response to violence: the pacifist and just war traditions. The paper is divided into three main parts. Locating Oscar Romero within the Latin American liberation theology tradition, it begins with a brief examination of the overall response of this movement towards violence. Next, it turns to the Salvadoran context within which Romero conducted his ministry. The third and final section turns to Romero’s teaching on violence as presented in his pastoral letters and homilies. |
