With regard to the second question (b), we can safely say that the contemporary church historians' research has the definitive advantage of preventing historical theology from becoming merely an exercise in theory. It forces the systematic theologian to consider the actual historical context in which his reflections are taking place. It also forces him to recognize how far his ideas are the product of contemporary conditions, and may well therefore lead him to readjust his ethical conclusions. In this way, the study of contemporary church history can be beneficial in restraining the tendencies towards losing touch with reality, or indulging in purely ideological thinking, which are sometimes found among systematic theologians. | ||
