Als Meron Mendel vor zwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland kam, stellte er überrascht fest, welche Bedeutung sein Heimatland Israel hier im öffentlichen Diskurs hatte. Schon damals konnten nahezu alle, mit denen er sprach, klare Positionen zu Israel und seiner Politik formulieren. Heute werden die Debatten noch heftiger geführt. Zuletzt haben sich Skandale aneinandergereiht – vom öffentlichen Streit um den antiisraelischen Philosophen Achille Mbembe im Jahr 2020 bis zur Documenta-Debatte von 2022. Einerseits wird eine Art „Freundschaftspflicht“ aufgrund der NS-Vergangenheit und dem andauernden Antisemitismus in Deutschland proklamiert. Andererseits stellt sich die Frage, wie Deutschland auf den sich verschärfenden Rechtskurs der Regierung in Jerusalem reagieren soll. Meron Mendel schildert in diesem Buch, wie das Verhältnis zu Israel und zum Nahostkonflikt in Deutschland verhandelt wird, in der Politik und in den Medien, unter Linken, unter Migranten und unter Juden. | ||
